What is your role at 93digital/93x?

I’ve just joined the 93x team as SEO Strategist

What does an average day look like for you?

When I log on in the morning, the first thing I do is check my emails to see if any disasters happened in SEO overnight (rarely does, but it’s good to be in the know!), then see what meetings and jobs I have coming up that day.

I like to use a Trello board as a personal productivity tracker. I use it to help manage everything I need to do today, as well as tasks that are upcoming or waiting, and also any priorities of things I want to learn.

No day in SEO is exactly the same, it’s always something different even if the processes are similar which I really like. Whether it’s content related, technical, the specific challenges and solutions will vary between clients and the current search landscape.

What’s the most challenging part of your job?

SEO changes all the time and there is always something new to do, and I have this terrible habit of wanting to do a million things at once! This is where my productivity tracker really helps me visualise the most important tasks to get done first and be mindful of my time and workflow.

Any advice for those who want to do what you do?

Stay up to date! As soon as you learn something about SEO, Google may change guidelines or they release another algorithm update which you need to be aware of. The quickest way to stay in the loop is to subscribe to SEO newsletters to get information from industry experts as soon as possible, such as Barry Schwartz and John Mueller from Google. It’s important to be open to change to keep your skillset current.

What future design and/or technology developments in the industry are you excited about?

I find it really fascinating how Google and other search engines are continually using AI to improve their NLP (natural language processing) to understand tiny variations in searcher intent to provide the most relevant results. With millions of new searches everyday, it’s amazing they can keep up. They’re doing some really great work to understand the people behind the searches, such as using MUM to detect when people are experiencing a personal crisis and serving them with resources to get them help.

What are your passions/hobbies/interests?

Knitting! Can’t say I’m the best knitter in the world but I can make a cosy pair of socks, soft teddies, and I’ve made a couple of Harry Potter style initial jumpers.

What’s your favourite thing to read in print/online?

I enjoy reading both fiction & nonfiction crime books because I find the different experiences and perspectives fascinating. In terms of online content, I quite like an ebook I can spend time learning from - I’m currently reading a Search Engine Journal ebook about SaaS Content Marketing

What music is currently trending on your playlist?

My music taste hasn’t evolved much since I was a teenager so I’m enjoying music from Travis Mills & Nick Gross’ new pop punk group, girlfriends.

Tell us a random fact about you…

I can’t swim, despite having lessons for a couple of years.
