Meet the team: Michael

What is your role at 93x?
I’ve just joined as the SEO Account Director.
What does an average day look like for you?
I try to make each day a bit different in some way because I never want my days to be average! But in terms of my role, a typical day involves me talking to clients, the team and others in the SEO community about the latest developments, as well as planning out and working on any upcoming actions we need to fulfill. I also take time to analyse the performance of my clients. Not something everyone likes doing, but fortunately for me, I love data!
What’s the most challenging part of your job?
Effort doesn’t always correlate with performance in SEO! SEO in itself is an art form, and how likely you are to succeed completely depends on the industry you’re in, and the intent you’re targeting. What works for one website may not work for another and explaining that can be incredibly complicated.
The same is true for introducing topics around the nuances and intricacies of SEO that have taken me years to learn myself to others who don’t specialise in SEO so are really early in their journeys. I know how hard that was to understand for me before I specialised in SEO!
Any advice for those who want to do what you do?
Read, learn and be open-minded. In SEO, you’ll typically find there are multiple ways to approach a complex problem, so take time to look into all of your options and understand the nuances to make the best decision. Also, keep track of everything you need to do - organisation is power in life!
What future design and/or technology developments in the industry are you excited about?
I love a cool bit of tech that improves my personal life or career. But really I want to see the world hit its environmental targets and become more sustainable, so any tech that helps to achieve that is great to see.
What are your passions/hobbies/interests?
I’d say over the last 3-4 years I’ve grown super passionate about wellness and mindfulness. I've started practicing both myself, and it’s done a tremendous amount for my state of mind and progression in life.
I’m big on music too, more on that shortly...
I’ve recently got into plants thanks to my partner Olive, and we now have 64 plants in our 1-bed flat...
I’m also a big football fan, though I unfortunately support Derby County for my sins. Wasn’t a choice!
What’s your favourite thing to read in print/online?
I love hearing about other SEO’s experiences and experiments. It helps inform the work I do for my clients. I read so much football news, probably too much, but I like to keep up-to-date on what’s happening and for my fantasy team.
For general news, I avoid some of the more “partial” tabloid outlets and try to focus on news from reputable sources. Like most people though, I want to read more books/novels but never do!
What music is currently trending on your playlist?
An eclectic mix. I grew up loving metal and rock, but now I’m obsessed with ambient and classical music. One minute I’ll be listening to some calming Ludovico Einaudi and then I’ll be blasting out some Queens of the Stoneage; it just completely depends on my mindset at the time.
The current artist I'm playing a lot is August Wilhelmsson; an ambient producer from Gothenburg.
Tell us a random fact about you…
I was the Derbyshire U16 champion at Laser Quest.
